Brightblack Morning Light were started by two childhood friends from Alabama who played one of their earliest shows (under the name Rainywood) for 15 people at a benefit for the Alabama Green Party in 2001. Influential fan Will Oldham a/k/a Bonnie “Prince” Billy invited Brightblack – then a duo of founding members Naybob Shineywater and Raybob Hughes - to accompany him on his tour. Success wasn’t far behind, and BBML have since broadened their fan base far beyond the 15 at their first show, yet they still remain fiercely protective of their roots as well as their music: "We feel like Southern music should be played by Southern people & don't dig it when other folks imitate accents,” say Shineywater and Hughes. In fact, on a recent European tour singer Naybob Shineywater sang each show with an arrowhead in his mouth. Why? To let his own sung words & breathe touch this stone before European ears could hear them.
