Bio:
Signal is a large ensemble comprising some of the most gifted and innovative musicians based in New York, devoted to presenting a broad range of new music with energy, passion and virtuosity. The ensemble performs under the musical direction of Brad Lubman, who founded Signal along with cellist and co-artistic director Lauren Radnofsky. Brad Lubman, one of the premier conductors of new music, has worked closely with some of the greatest composers of contemporary concert music (Berio, Boulez, Reich, Wuorinen, Lachenmann), and has appeared with some of the world’s most illustrious ensembles.

With Signal, Lubman steps out with a superb, handpicked collection of musicians who have worked closely with him during the past ten years. Among these are all the members of So Percussion, plus members of Alarm Will Sound, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Gutbucket, and other leading New York ensembles.

Signal made its first appearances in Spring 2008 at the Bang on a Can Marathon in NYC, earning praise from The New York Times for its “auspicious debut…a powerful account of Steve Reich’s Daniel Variations,” and at the Ojai Music Festival in California, where it was lauded for “deeply committed performances” (Musical America) of “gripping vehemence” (LA Times). Fall 2008 saw a sold-out evening of Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians and You Are (Variations) at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge, where Signal was praised by the New York Times for its “vibrant, euphoric performances that seemed to electrify…”

Upcoming Signal projects include an all-Reich disc for Cantaloupe records (including Daniel Variations and You Are Variations), the co-commission and premiere of a new work by Reich, the U.S. premiere of Harrison Birtwistle’s chamber opera The Corridor, and a tour with Helmut Lachenmann. Beginning in 2009-10 Signal will also present several concerts at University of Buffalo as a visiting resident ensemble.
